Master of Communication

Screen Studies
This programme is designed for students who wish to develop theoretical knowledge and production skills in film & video in the context of new media technology.

This programme will also examine current global issues relating to the electromic media as well as issues of convergence and the interface between film, television and multimedia.

Course Structure
This programme requires students to complete 40 units of coursework which include a major research project and a film or video production.

-Film Aesthetic
-Television and Society
-Television Genre and Analysis
-Graduate Research Project
-Screen Production

Admission Requirements
-A relevant first degree with honours or equivalent, from a recognized university.
-Working experience in related field would be an added advantage.
-Malaysia students should obtain a least a credit in Bahasa Malaysia at SPM level or its equivalent.

Science and Environmental Journalism
This programme is designed mainly to prepare students for a professional career as science and environmental writers, reporters and editors in the media industry, research institutions and environment related organizations. Even though this programme is geared towards preparing students for the professional track, most of the courses are theory-based. It is believed that a strong understanding of the media processes and practices as well as the role of science in society will enable communicators to make significant contributions to the public understanding of science and environmental issues.

Course Structure
Students are required to obtain a total of 44 units from the three course components as listed below:-

Core courses (26 units)
Public Communication; Science and Technology; Science Writing and Reporting; Seminar on Media, Science and Environment; and Science Journalism Ethics and Law.

Elective courses (8 units)
Science and Electronic Media; Science Writing for Public Relations or complete a research project/

Optional courses (10 units)
Biodiversity; Ecology; Conservation; Industrial Waste Management; and Organization Management.

Admission Requirements
-A relevant first degree with honours or equivalent, from a recognized university.
-Strong background knowledge in science at SPM, STPM, matriculation or degree level.
Or
-A minimum of three years working experience in related fields.
-Malaysia students should obtain a least a credit in Bahasa Malaysia at SPM level or its equivalent.

Master of Arts

Communication
The Master of Arts (Communication) programme is broad based to meet the needs of a wide range of candidates. It emphasizes communication theory and research and their applications to communication policy and practices. The programme is offered via two modes.

 

(A) Mixed Mode (Coursework and Dissertation)
This mode provides students with the opportunity to develop sound understanding of major communication theories and research specifically in the study of journalism, communication and societal issues, technology and culture.

Course Structure
Students are required to complete five courses comprising of three core and two elective courses as well as a dissertation. The core courses offered are Advanced Communication Theory. Advanced Communication Research Methods and Communication Policy and Ethics. The elective courses are International Communication, Seminar on Public Communication Campaigns and Television Genres and Analysis.

 

(B) Research Mode
The second mode caters to students who already posses a strong theoretical background and wish to undertake independent research.

Course Structure
Students are required to conduct research and complete a dissertation. The school offers supervision for master’s research in the following areas of specializations:
-International communication
-Political communication
-Communication and culture
Film and television studies
-Broadcasting
-New communication technology
-Audience analysis
Media education
-Advertising
-Public relations
-Media institutions
Communication planning

-A relevant first degree with honours or its equivalent from a recognized university.
-Relevant working experience in the field of communication will be an added advantage.
-Malaysian students should obtain a least a credit in Bahasa Malaysia ar SPOM Level or its equicalent.

Doctor of Philosophy

The School of Communication welcomes candidates for research leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Suitably qualified applications will complete their doctoral degree by thesis working applicants will complete their doctoral degree by thesis working under the supervision of one or more appropriate faculty members.

Admission Requirements
Application should possess a Maters degree or bachelors degree with honours class 1 in a related field from a recognized university. Applicants are required to submit a research proposal and may be invited to attend an interview to demonstrate their ability to conduct independent research.

Course Duration
This program is offered on a full-time or part-time basis.
